Most Luxurious Accommodation in High Dartmoor

Since the sad closure of Prince Hall Hotel, Wydemeet is now probably the most luxurious accommodation available on high Dartmoor, and the highest rated.

It is always fascinating to read your reviews, to find out what we could do better, and to get a feel of your Wydemeet experience.

'Management of Expectations' is one of my mantra's, so below is an attempt to give you a sense of what we're all about, as I think we're probably quite unusual.

If you exclaim "it's just like Granny's house!" as you drive through our ponderous, moss-clad, electric five-bar wooden gate, we take that as a compliment, not an insult.  You have stumbled across the real thing - quintissential, mildly eccentric, English upper class hospitality. Something that most British people will immediately recognise.

You have chosen a comfortable family home, in preference to a 5* hotel.   We don't have teams of gardeners, DIY men and housekeepers, but we always do our very best to make sure that everything works, that everywhere is clean and tidy, and that you have a relaxing and truly memorable stay. Quite a challenge after these endless unseasonal storms!

Straight from our front door, you can take long walks in every direction, with no sign-posts, and often not even a footpath. But you'll be armed with one of my maps, carefully filled in, and explained over an individually cooked breakfast.

You are welcomed as part of the family, you will sleep in one of our two best bedrooms, and we are always fascinated to learn all about you, and to swap stories, hopefully of increasing hilarity.

I love running the B&B so much that I'd almost (but not quite) do it for nothing!  However, sometimes I might find myself serving 100 breakfasts in a row without a break. So to maintain the joy, and to be sure that what I do never feels like an exhausting chore or simply a job, my only rule is that breakfast is taken at any time after 9.00am.  Hearty early risers are best off going somewhere else - we're here for indulgence,  relaxation and fun, as well as for ensuring that you experience the absolute most of everything that Dartmoor has to offer.

Ive lived here for nearly 30 years, and am familiar with all the best walks, unknown wild swimming places, fishing pools, pubs etc.

We are not a good centre for exploring the West Country by car, so anticipate leaving yours in the drive. But you will need it for supper, as there is only one pub within walking distance, and the better ones are slightly further afield. Expect 'character' over gourmet!

I will make sure that you derive the absolute most from every hour of your stay with us, whether its for two nights, or a week. Chuck your guide book in the bin. Unless you prefer to follow well-trodden tracks, surrounded by other tourists, in which case they will be very useful!

    Mary, Mower of the Moor

Four hours before Mary's first guest was due to arrive - Alastair Sawday himself - she was still working out how to turn on the hoover, and contemplating the ordeal of mowing her garden herself for the first time.

The original blog follows a family coming to terms with marital breakdown, and the resulting emergence of Wydemeet B&B, from conception and its first shaky steps.  It has now been turned into a book: "Surviving Solo", by Mary Nicholson, available through Amazon.

But if it takes her mood, Mary continues to add to the blog from time to time.
